Location Photography

The history of your family can come to life when it is accompanied by pictures of the places where they lived in centuries gone by, the churches where they were baptised or married, or their final resting places.

Families often moved around more than we expect, especially after the Industrial Revolution of the 19th Century.  Frequently family members today live hundreds of miles from where their ancesters were.

Making a 'pilgrimage' to a place where your family once lived can be a very exciting thing to do.  But if you do not have the time to do this, or if you live too far away, perhaps in another country, I would be pleased to take photographs for you.

Sometimes it is difficult to identify exactly where someone lived.  Roads have been renamed, houses have been renumbered, even names of villages have changed.  By using old maps and other records I can help you identify a location if necessary.

Case Study

One of my own ancestors owned The Crown Inn in the small Gloucestershire town of Wickwar during the early 1700s.  It no longer exists as an inn but I was able to discover an early photograph (see left), located it on a 19th Century map and, having identified its precise location, then visited to take photographs of it as it is today - a private pink-painted house with no visible indication of its former role.

Ask for a quotation

Please contact me with brief details of what research you would like done or where you would like photographs taken so I can provide you with a quotation for the cost.  An initial consultation is free of charge and without any obligation.

Photos can be sent to you as finished prints, or in electronic form on a CD or by email.

Although I can take location photographs almost anywhere in the UK, it is most cost-effective when I take them in places I regularly visit (the travel cost can then be shared with other projects).  These areas are Central London, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Dorset and some other counties in the South West of England.
